Starstruck reporters miss grassroots ideas

IN covering the ongoing national legislative and advisory conferences in Beijing, many journalists unfortunately have ignored grassroots voices in their misguided missions to scoop each other for interviews with celebrities and government officials.

A smile, even a pout, from a celebrity like film director Zhang Yimou is considered newsworthy by many journalists, no matter what those celebrities said in their capacity as our country's legislators or political advisers.

This is not news. "Following the stars and officials" has become a rule of reporting for many journalists over the past few years. You hardly ever hear what the non-stars and non-officials suggest in the interests of our nation.

In a sense, grassroots lawmakers and advisers have been marginalized by parts of our political and media cultures that often "listen up" and seldom "look down."

Celebrities and officials have their own wisdom, to be sure, but over-amplifying their voices at the expense of grassroots ideas serves no good.
