VIP seats unjust idea as riders squeezed

SHENZHEN City in Guangdong Province plans to set up VIP services on its subway line No. 11, providing guaranteed seats for double the standard ticket price.

While this may demonstrate Shenzhen's readiness to improve its subway service, the VIP concept merits a second thought: Is time really ripe to turn out VIP this or VIP that at a time when most passengers are squeezed for limited space on subways?

Shenzhen now has five subway lines totaling 178 kilometers. Overcrowding has been a headache since the opening of the city's first subway line. Given that most passengers are still overcrowded, VIP services seem out of sync with reality.

Yes, there are VIP rooms in hospitals and experimental classes in schools - which all cater to people's different demands - but these are not good examples. VIP patient rooms and experimental school classes may well worsen citizens' already unequal rights at a time when the country's investment in healthcare and education is far from enough (to cover the basic needs of all the people).

VIP services are not bad per se, but for now, the priority is to make more passengers less squeezed.
