Water wasted despite Beijing shortage

BEIJING is short of water, and yet many Beijingers waste water every day as if there's no shortage.

Most Beijingers don't seem to know that the city's underground has hollowed out due to years of water extraction and that the city is short of at least 1.3 billion cubic meters of water this year. Waste of water is seen everywhere.

Take public bath houses, for example. There are cheap bath houses in many hutongs that cater to low-income citizens.

A standard admission fee ranges from 8 to 10 yuan (US$1.25-US$1.52) per person, with no limits on time or the amount of water used. As a result, many patrons take a shower for well over one hour while it can be done in less than 20 minutes. They just let water run.

Young people waste water all the more. They let water run even when they wash a pair of socks. Older people, on the contrary, take trouble to save water, but they don't seem to know about Beijing's water crisis either.
