Why adult children sponge off parents
ON Monday, the Guangzhou Daily quoted sociologist Jing Tiankui as saying that more than 65 percent of Chinese families see parents supporting the lives of their adult children.
Jing Tiankui, also a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, suggested China cancel every social benefit for nonworking adult children to force them to be independent.
Indeed, that there are so many NEETS (adult children not in employment, education or training) is a glaring social ill, but to cancel all social benefits to them does seem a bit too far.
In many cases, NEETS are not of their own making. Ours is a time when costs are often prohibitively high for anyone to study, work and live in a city, especially a big city. Without parental support, many children would have had no place in society upon graduation from college.
