Wide sale of professional titles shows deep decay

WANT to get a higher professional title? Send me money to my hotel room.

On May 4, someone reported on weibo (Chinese version of twitter) that Liu Yibing, a member of an academic committee in charge of reviewing college teachers' professional applications in Hunan Province, had publicized his hotel room number to make it easy for applicants to bribe him.

The next day, education authorities in Hunan canceled Liu's membership in the committee and investigations are in process. If the weibo microblog report were true, there couldn't be worse cases of academic corruption in the already decayed professional-title-reviewing process.

It's an open secret that many people crowned with the title of a professor are academically incompetent. At the same time, many capable professionals who refuse to bribe their way up are always denied a chance of promotion.

The more money you give reviewers, the quicker you climb up the academic ladder. This is why many college teachers curry favor with those reviewers in disregard of intellectual integrity. It's a kind of collective corruption.

The one who reported Liu's case on weibao should be applauded as a whistle-blower, but one female teacher in Hunan Province has found fault in him as she reportedly has scolded him: "We've sent our money to the reviewer, and now because of you, our effort has been wasted."
