Medicare made easier for retirees
HOW wonderful it must be if you, after having worked in Shanghai for so long, decide to retire and settle down in a smaller, rural region outside the city.
But you often dare not move out of town for post-retirement life. One hurdle: your medicare in Shanghai does not apply beyond the city’s borders. If you fall ill in another city, you’ll face immeasurable difficulties in having your medical bills reimbursed back in Shanghai.
Good news: China announced on December 24 that, by 2016, retirees can reimburse their medical bills wherever they settle down — be it their hometown or elsewhere. This is indeed bonus for people whose free movement will be otherwise seriously handicapped. If we take into consideration the fact that more and more children live away from their parents in different cities, the new policy will be a boost to traditional Chinese family values, because it will allow retired parents to reunite with their children without worrying about medical care.
