Time to return to our traditional values

To discard tradition is to cut one’s spiritual lifeblood, said President Xi Jinping on February 24 during a group study of socialist core values at the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

This is about the most positive comment on China’s traditional culture I have seen lately. That goes a full circle of nearly 100 years to restore our due respect for our traditional culture. Under the influence of the West, China has sought to do away with much of its traditional culture ever since 1919, when Confucius was stigmatized as feudalistic.

Confucian values were further attacked during the “cultural revolution” from 1966 to 1976. And in the past 30 years of heady  growth, the cult of GDP seemed to have taken root in many places in China as the core value.

Now, after nearly a century’s trials and errors, let’s give our traditional culture of benevolence, people first, honesty, justice and harmony a warm, big hug.
