Big ocean festival sets sail today
AN international ocean festival weighs anchor today and the 26-day program includes a naval parade and port call, yacht races and shows, sea sports, marine ecology shows, plus song, dance and flair bartending competitions.
The 2010 China Qingdao International Ocean Festival kicks off at the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center in the coastal city, one of China's most popular and scenic tourist destinations. It's loaded with fine food and things to do for every taste.
The annual event, which began in 1999, features four major parts: a Chinese Navy festival, ocean tourism culture, sea sports and International Sailing Week. Weather and wind conditions may affect some activities and schedule.
There will be two phases. The first -- from July 24 to August 9 -- will include the Navy festival, ocean tourism and sea sports. The second phase -- from August 21 to 29 -- will be the International Sailing Week.
Vessels from the People's Liberation Army will make a port call at the Olympic Sailing Center so visitors can go aboard and learn about naval defense. A military band and song and dance troupe will perform.
Yacht Life Week -- from July 24 to August 1 -- will not only exhibit recommended yachts, and offer high-end "test drives," but also provide visitors a chance to go sailing. Around 10 yachts of Sunseeker 80, the Taiwan International Yacht Club and Nine Dragon Hill International Yacht Club have already called at the harbor. More yachts from other companies are expected. Several island travel routes and sea-sailing trips will be available for visitors.
A new version of the performance "Lanse Changxiang" ("Thinking Freely Blue"), with 3-D projections, tells a romantic story set in Qingdao and filled with city culture. It will be performed nightly in the theater of the Olympic Sailing Center.
Other weekly performances will be held in a plaza nearby.
Qingdao is famous for its beer and it features a beer street and new wine street, along with a vast wine museum in an old civil defense shelter.
Night owls can party at the bar street at the sailing center. Flair bartending, fashion shows, jazz, magic and X-games will enliven the already-lively scene.
Big shows by wedding companies, with scenic backdrops, are expected to attract couples.
Sea sports competitions will include yacht races, sampan races, sea fishing, swimming, diving and volleyball.
Students from naval military colleges and local universities will race sampans. Middle-aged and elderly volleyball players from China and the US will compete.
On August 8, 10 kid swimmers aged from 10 to 12 years will undertake a four-hour race from the First Swimming Beach to the Olympic Sailing Center, marking the National Fitness Day.
International Sailing Week promotes the sport and lifestyle with an international forum, two sailing competitions, and sailing training camps to teach visitors about sailing.
