Harboring great plans for Qingdao
Construction is one year along on the grand plan for the Dongjiakou Port of Qingdao, and by the end of the year two docks will be completed and put into basic use.
The Luneng General Dock and an iron ore dock handling ships of 400,000 tons will be the first elements in the 2010-15 first phase of the enormous 20-year project extending into 2030.
The entire project is expected to cost nearly 100 billion yuan (US$14 billion).
The new Dongjiakou Port is one of nine core economic zones of sea-related business in Shandong Province.
It will play a major role in establishing shipping and related industries on the Shandong Peninsula and improving Qingdao's competitive edge in Northeast Asia.
Qingdao Port was built 118 years ago and has played a key role in social and economic development of Qingdao.
In 2009, the port handled 323 million tons of cargo, ranking it fifth in the nation.
But sustainable development of the port as it exists is impossible. It is seriously overloaded, the transport and distribution systems cannot meet demand and the port and city areas are too close together, limiting the development of both.
These has made construction of Dongjiakou Port essential.
Located on Langyatai Bay in the south of Qingdao, Dongjiakou Port is a natural deepwater port of 15 to 20 meters, extending as far as 1,000 meters from land. Thus the heaviest ships can dock there easily and it is not necessary to dig a new sea channel.
The coastline extends almost 30 kilometers.
Unique advantages
Dongjiakou Harbor's location is ideal for international shipping as it lies within the Northeast Asia economic circle, just 10 kilometers from major international shipping channels.
It is around 69 kilometers from Qianwan Port of Qingdao, 75 kilometers away from the Qingdao International Airport, 56 kilometers from Shijiu Port in Rizhao City and 74 kilometers from Lanshan Port. In addition, the Undersea Tunnel of Jiaozhou Bay will reach the Dongjiakou Port after the tunnel is connected with the southern part of the Qingdao Coast Road.
Qinglian Railway (Qingdao-Lianyungang), which is already under construction, will have a station in Dongjiakou Port. After all construction is complete, it will be a port of multiple modes of transport.
In March 2009, the general plan for Dongjiakou Port was approved by the Ministry of Transportation and the Shandong Province government.
Under the plan the entire port area will cover around 70 square kilometers, including 55 square kilometers in the industrial zone. Coastal docks will be almost 36 kilometers in length.
The port will have three docks for 400,000-ton ore and mineral ships and two docks for 450,000-ton oil tankers and petroleum products ships. It will offer berths for 112 ships.
It is expected to have an annual input and output capacity of 370 million tons.
A residential area for 300,000 people will be built near the harbor to promote overall development of the area.
Phases
The long-term development plan is divided into three phases.
Phase 1, 2010-15, will focus on transport of goods from Jiaozhou Bay to Dongjiakou Port as well as basic harbor construction. By 2015 the port is expected to handle 76 million tons of goods annually, including 21 million tons of coal, 3.2 million tons of petroleum products, 49 million tons of minerals and 2.8 million tons of other goods.
Phase 2, 2016-20, will focus on construction of a national distribution center for goods and a storage and transport center for energy goods. By 2020 the Dongjiakou Port's annual throughput capacity will be more than 141 million tons.
And together with the other three great port along the Shandong coast -- Qingdao Port, Rizhao Port and Yantai Port -- the total annual throughput capacity will be more than 1.5 billion tons by 2020.
Phase 3, 2021-30, will focus on construction of a modern and comprehensive international harbor. By 2030, the construction and development of Dongjiakou Port will be basically completed.
