Port of Qingdao leads the way

THE Port of Qingdao is an important hub in international trade and sea transport. It is China's second-largest port for international trade and is the largest trans-shipment port for international containers.

The port was founded in 1892 and has built trade relationship with over 450 ports in more than 130 countries and regions.

In 1997, the Port of Qingdao became China's first port enterprise to receive ISO9002 quality certification for cargo and passenger transport. There are three port areas: Old Port, Huangdao Oil Port and Qianwan New Port.

The Qingdao Port offers multiple services and can handle a variety of cargo and project equipment.

The five major types of cargo are containers, coal, iron ore, crude oil and grain. The port also handles fertilizer, alumina, cement, sodium carbonate, rubber, wool, cotton and other materials.

In 2009, the port reached a record volume of 315.46 million tons, a 5.1 percent increase from a year earlier, and the container volume hit 10.26 million TEU, up by 2.4 percent from a year earlier. Both ranked within the world's top 10.

Besides its large-scale container, crude oil and iron ore facilities, the port is also equipped with a first-class coal terminal, a state-of-the-art grain-handling base, and the largest EDI center on the Chinese mainland.

The spirit of the Port of Qingdao has been guiding the people for a century. The port aims to provide the best services to clients and serve society and the nation.

The port also pays attention to the workers' treatment, and staff members' life quality is improving year by year.

Prior to the Labor Day in 2009, President Hu Jintao inspected the port for the second time and expressed great satisfaction with all operations.

In January 2009, Premier Wen Jiabao spent the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday with workers at the port and had dinner with them in the canteen.

In 2009, while confronting the financial crisis, the port's Q1 cargo throughput reached 78.45 million tons, an increase of 4.5 percent year-on-year and its monthly throughput was up to 26.46 million tons - both port records. The container volume was 2.5 million TEU in the first quarter, up by 2.3 percent year-on-year, consolidating its third place among Chinese ports.

In Q1, the Port of Qingdao was the only one of five major Chinese coastal ports sustaining growth during the market slowdown.

For years, the port has carried out the national policy of building an environmentally friendly society and has enforced a series of policies to save energy and reduce waste.

To improve the environment, the port is introducing strategies to rebuild facilities and manage the productions and posts.

The in-and-out volume has been tripled since the Third National Five-Year Plan, but the overall resource consumption decreased by 29.7 percent, with an annual average of 4.1 percent.

By 2020, the port aims to cut energy consumption by 40 percent, compared with 2005.

For more than a decade, the Port of Qingdao had already spent 350 million yuan (US$51.3 million) on environmental protection and built facilities to support the port.

From 2001 to 2008, the total electricity saved by the port was almost 82.2 million kwh, nearly equal to the annual use of 100,000 residents. The oil saving was 14,246 tons, enough to operate 3,000 buses for five months.

The Port of Qingdao also invests in research to save energy.

The port also carries out three major environmental projects: blue sky, green grass and clear water.

The port invested 40 million yuan to build a barrier wall to block coal dust and other pollutants. It spent millions of yuan to plant trees around the port and its green zone covers more than 1 million square meters.

The port is one of the most environmentally friendly in the world. It has won awards for National Environmentally Friendly Enterprise and China Outstanding Contribution Prize for Enterprise Management.

Qingdao Port (Group) Co Ltd, formally known as the Qingdao Port Authority, was restructured on January 8, 2003. The new company is comprised of eight departments.

The port has 11 branches, including Dagang Co, Qingdao Port Oil Co, Qingdao Port Xigang Co, among others.

It has established friendship port relationship with the ports of Koici, Shimizu and Shimotsu (Japan), Wilhelmshaven (Germany), Seattle and Long Beach (USA), Barcelona (Spain) and others.

The Port of Qingdao has won many national and provincial awards and honors. It not only has a rich history but also represents the future of the industry.
