World Garden Expo blooms in 2014
Qingdao will hold the six-month "Olympic Games" of gardening -- the World Horticultural Exposition -- in April 2014 in Baiguoshan Forest Park.
It will be the first time that China will hold the event in a mountainous city by the sea.
The Qingdao event will be held from April 18 to October 18, 2014 in the forest park that covers more than 5 square kilometers. It is close to the Laoshan Scenic Area.
The organizing committee is soliciting proposed slogans for the event.
Qingdao has four major advantages in hosting the exposition, according to the bidding team. The climate averages 12.2 degrees Celsius, excellent for the growth of many plants. The city's strong urban economy can easily support a large-scale expo. Domestic and international transport connections are very convenient. The city's tourism system is well developed.
The Laoshan Scenic Area is fertile, mountainous and hilly, with dramatic rock formations, leafy forests and a large reservoir.
"The best garden is in the mountains," said Ji Cheng, a famous gardener in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and this site is ideal.
Previous horticultural expos hosted by China were held in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, in 2006, and in Kunming, Yunnan Province, in 1999. The 2011 horticultural expo will be held in Xi'an, capital city of Shaanxi Province.
Compared with these, the Qingdao event will be distinctive, staged in a coastal city with a mountain area.
The exposition will be an economic asset and naturally merged with urban areas that surround the site. The areas are mostly constructed.
The site itself has complete basic facilities and construction will not involve great changes to the current landscape, vegetation and water system.
The site will have seven areas: main entrance, garden region, mountain region, forum region, floral art region, vacation region and sightseeing region.
All planning and construction are to be environmentally sustainable, and wind, solar power and geothermal energy will be utilized. The original ecology will be maintained as much as possible.
There are two major kinds of international expositions, the comprehensive expos like the World Expo in Shanghai, and the specialized professional events, like the World Horticultural Exposition.
The garden show is authorized by the International Horticultural Producers Association, which was founded in 1948. It has 28 member countries; the China Florists Association joined in 1994. The first World Horticultural Exposition was held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 1960.
