Ducks use Hiller to blank Coyotes

THE Anaheim Ducks shut out the Phoenix Coyotes 2-0 on Sunday to take outright second place in the Pacific Division.

Chris Pronger and Bobby Ryan scored power-play goals and backup netminder Jonas Hiller posted his third shutout of the season to move the Ducks two points ahead of the Coyotes.

The two teams had been tied for second behind division leader San Jose.

Scott Niedermayer had two assists while Ryan also assisted on Pronger's goal for the home team. Pronger scored off a Niedermayer pass 3:32 into the second period with rookie Ryan making it 2-0 2:59 into the third.

"Tonight was our best team effort that we've had," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said.

"I think the difference in the game was our specialty teams. We got two power-play goals and they went o-fer (0-for-4) on their power play, so our penalty killers and our power-play guys stood up."

Hiller recorded 29 saves as the Ducks won for just the second time in seven games.

"For me, it's important to play as much as possible because I think for a goalie, experience is a big part in this game," said Hiller, the backup to All-Star starter Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

He stopped eight consecutive Phoenix shots at one point in the second period with the Coyotes on the power play.

"It was tough," Hiller said. "They were in our zone for four minutes."

In other Sunday games, it was: Blackhawks 5, Flames 2; Devils 4, Senators 3, OT; Canadiens 6, Panthers 5, SO; Lightning 4, Thrashers 1; Wild 2, Avalanche 0; and Stars 3, Canucks 2, SO.

In Chicago, Nikolai Khabibulin made 34 saves, and Martin Havlat, Andrew Ladd and Patrick Sharp each had a goal and an assist as the Chicago Blackhawks rebounded from consecutive losses to beat the Calgary Flames 5-2.

Kris Versteeg and Dustin Byfuglien also scored for Chicago.

Todd Bertuzzi and Daymond Langkow scored for Calgary. Chicago ended the Flames' winning streak at five and snapped their points streak at 10 games.

Calgary hadn't lost in regulation since December 9 at Montreal.

Blackhawks scoring leader Patrick Kane was sidelined by a high-ankle sprain, the first game he has missed in his NHL career due to injury.

In Newark, New Jersey, Brian Rolston scored a power-play goal 1:43 into overtime to give New Jersey a victory over Ottawa.
