Spurs survive Wade's onslaught as Heat's winning streak ends
THE San Antonio Spurs withstood NBA scoring leader Dwyane Wade's 24-point performance to overcome the Miami Heat 91-84 on Monday.
Tim Duncan paced the Southwest Division leaders with 19 points and nine rebounds, and four other Spurs were in double figures. George Hill came off the bench to score 15 points, Matt Bonner and Roger Mason had 11 each and Manu Ginobili added 10.
Ginobili and Tony Parker both had trouble scoring but Hill stepped in to contribute to the winning effort by connecting on all four field-goal attempts, including three three-pointers.
Wade had 12 assists and four steals to go with his 24 points, while Shawn Marion and Michael Beasley backed him up with 15 points apiece.
Beasley also had 12 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Despite falling behind early, the Heat refused to buckle and Wade had a chance to pull Miami within a point late in the fourth quarter but Ginobili blocked his dunk attempt and Mason scored off a jumper to lift the Spurs to their eighth win in nine games.
"We played defense for 48 minutes," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters. "We made some mistakes here and there on offense, turned it over here and there and got cold for a couple of stretches. But the defense was sound for 48 minutes."
The loss brought an end to Miami's five-game home winning streak.
"We fight back and get in it and they just stab you again," Beasley added.
"They've been doing it for so long, it's kind of expected."
In Denver, Carmelo Anthony scored 21 points and had a season-high nine assists despite fracturing his right hand in the Denver Nuggets' 135-115 victory over the Indiana Pacers.
Anthony injured his hand when the ball was slapped away early in the third quarter.
He continued playing, but frequently grabbed at his hand. He had the Nuggets trainer check it out a few times when play stopped and then left for good late in the fourth quarter. Kenyon Martin scored 25 points and Chauncey Billups scored 13 of his 24 points in the final quarter for the Nuggets, who have now won four in a row.
They set a season-high in points against the Pacers. Their previous best was 132 against Toronto in early December.
Denver is 24-12 after 36 games, matching the Nuggets' best start since their first year in the NBA way back in 1976-77.

In Milwaukee, Michael Redd had a season-high 35 points and Charlie Villanueva scored 13 of his 25 in the fourth quarter to lead Milwaukee to its first win without Andrew Bogut in 21 months.

The Raptors, playing without center Jermaine O'Neal and guard Jose Calderon on this two-game road trip, turned to Chris Bosh, who had 31 points and 11 rebounds to help Toronto hold the lead through most of three quarters.
