Wolff looks to end F1's female drought
SUSIE Wolff will gain further experience in Williams' Formula One car this week when she takes part in testing at Silverstone.
The Scot joined Williams as a development driver in April 2012 in a bid to become the first woman on the F1 grid in more than three decades.
In-season testing has been allowed at Silverstone from today to Friday to allay safety fears after concerns about burst tires at the British Grand Prix.
"It's a fantastic opportunity for me, so now it is up to me to prepare myself the best that I can for the day," Wolff said. "It's going to be a big challenge. But the most important thing is to do a solid and consistent job and to give good feedback to the team to be able to prove I am at the level to compete on a day such as this."
Wolff, who started racing at age 8 after her parents bought her and her brother karts, is being billed as the best chance for a woman to break a F1 drought that dates to the 1970s.
Italy's Lella Lombardi was the last woman to race in F1, finishing sixth at the 1975 Spanish GP. The first woman to race was another Italian, Maria Teresa de Filippis, debuting in 1958.
"Most of my work is based in the simulator, which is why this day is so important for me," Wolff said. "It will give me a better understanding of what the car is like on track and how that correlates to the simulator."
Meanwhile, Daniel Ricciardo's hopes of replacing fellow-Australian Mark Webber at Red Bull were given a boost yesterday when the F1 champions said he would test for them at Silverstone this week.
Also, Pat Symonds, the former Renault F1 engineering head who was banned from Formula One in 2009 after a Singapore Grand Prix crash scandal, has joined Williams as chief technical officer.
