Loitzl leaps to third-leg victory, increases lead
WOLFGANG Loitzl of Austria won the third leg of the prestigious Four Hills ski jumping tournament on Sunday in Innsbruck, Austria, to increase his lead at the top of the event standings.
The 28-year-old Loitzl, who also won the second stop in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on Thursday for his first World Cup victory, had jumps of 126.5 and 128.5 meters to earn 261 points, beating fellow Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer by 0.7 points. Martin Schmitt of Germany led after the opening round but finished third.
"This is great again," said Loitzl, who was the first Austrian winner in Innsbruck since 2000. "After getting that first win under my belt it's all become a bit easier. I knew that I could win again here."
In the tournament standings, Loitzl has 822.5 points, overall World Cup leader Simon Amman of Switzerland is second with 806.7 and Schlierenzauer is third with 798.
"It's a nice buffer, but nothing's decided yet," Loitzl said. "I will not defend but continue to attack as my form is just superb now."
Loitzl could become the first Austrian winner of the tournament since Andreas Wildhoelzl in 1999.
The Four Hills tournament concludes today in Austria.
In cross country skiing, Dario Cologna of Switzerland claimed the men's Tour de Ski title on Sunday by winning the 11-kilometer pursuit, and Virpi Kuitunen of Finland won the women's competition after taking first place in the 9K pursuit in Val di Fiemme, Italy.
Kuitunen won the women's race, a day after winning the 10K classic.
