Hosszu dominates 400m IM as Ye sinks to fourth
After four difficult years, Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu is going to have a golden wedding.
A month before she marries her coach, Hosszu downright dominated the 400-meter individual medley at the World Swimming Championships in Barcelona on Monday, winning by nearly 1 1/2 seconds and relegating Olympic champion Ye Shiwen of China to fourth.
Hosszu hadn’t won a medal at a full international championship since she took home one gold and two bronzes from the 2009 worlds in Rome.
“I haven’t been on top since 2009,” she said. “It’s really great to be back.... This is a big win in Hungary.”
It was a major turnaround from a year ago, when Ye stunned the field as a 16-year-old and Hosszu staggered to a last place finish in the final.
Ye said she didn’t feel right.
“I was expecting to do better,” she said, “but after the first 100 meters I felt pretty bad in the water. I tried to catch up in the breaststroke (third leg), but it left me too much to do over the last 50 meters.”
Ye also said she weighs more than she did at the London Games.
“That was slower than expected but I did everything I could,” Ye said. “After the Olympics I couldn’t sleep, so I couldn’t prepare like I had done before. I’m five kilograms heavier than I was at the Olympics. I need to go back and train harder and hopefully I’ll do better next time.
In August, Hosszu will marry her American coach, Shane Tusup. She started training under him five years ago but then enrolled at the University of Southern California, where she swam under Dave Salo.
She graduated last year and moved back to Hungary after the Olympics to train once again under Tusup.
Also, Christian Sprenger made sure the Australian men won’t endure another gold-medal shutout like the one in London, edging South African world-record holder Cameron van der Burgh in the men’s 100 breast.
“To finally have the Australian anthem played for me, it’s an extraordinary feeling, and after a swim I couldn’t be prouder of,” Sprenger said. “Our team had some setbacks last year, but we came through stronger.
