Serena's win caps golden summer
THREE months ago, Serena Williams was at her lowest after going out in the first round of the French Open - her earliest exit at a grand slam. On Sunday, the 30-year-old American capped off a 'golden summer' by winning a fourth US Open crown for her 15th slam singles title. Her victory in the last grand slam of the season came after she won Wimbledon and singles and doubles gold medals at the 2012 London Games.
"Losses really motivate me," Serena said after her 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 victory over world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in a thrilling US Open women's final. "I was miserable after that loss in Paris. I have never been so miserable after a loss," she said of her defeat to 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano of France.
"I don't know if that helped me, the loss in Paris. I like to believe it did, because I just wanted to do more. I wanted to do more and more and more."
After beating Australian Open champion Azarenka on Sunday, Serena collapsed on her back and covered her face in shock.
"This is the most best feeling I think in tennis," she said.
Serena has had to overcome more than defeats. She battled a slew of injuries over the last few years, including a severe foot injury and life-threatening blood clots in her lungs, and also had behavior issues that plagued her at the US Open.
Azarenka hailed Serena as the greatest player of all time and vowed to learn from suffering a chastening 10th defeat in 11 meetings with the American veteran in the US Open final.
"For me, she's the greatest player of all time. She has taken the game to the next level," said 23-year-old Azarenka, who was just 10 when Serena won her first US Open as a teenager in 1999.
"But I have to be positive because I feel like these kind of matches, every time I play Serena, it really pushes me to be better, to improve, to move forward. I have to be thankful to her for that."
Azarenka has only beaten Serena once - in the 2009 Miami final - with seven of her defeats coming in the majors.
"She makes me all the time make sure that I'm taking my game, my personality, my physical aspect to the next level," said Azarenka.
"Having few of the players like that in the women's tour is something priceless, something that you cannot take away. Today I was close. I'm going to have another opportunity to make something better. That's what I'm looking for."
