Car chase thriller's new episode action packed

FOR those savvy moviegoers who usually have lower expectations of a seemingly never-ending franchise, "Fast & Furious 4," the latest interquel of the 2001 car-themed series "The Fast and The Furious," has turned out to be quite an exception.

Directed by Taiwan native Justin Lin, the same man behind the making of "The Fast & The Furious 3: Tokyo Drift" (2006), this surprisingly entertaining action-adventure flick brings fugitive ex-con Dom Toretto (played by masculine action star Vin Diesel) back to the car-crazed streets of Los Angeles where it all began in the original.

When Dom is about to reignite his feud with now FBI agent Brian O'Conner (played by heart-throb Paul Walker), they're accidently forced to confront their new shared enemy: a notorious drug lord.

From fierce street car racing to perilous cross-border heroin trafficking, the duo gradually finds the best way to get revenge: push the limits of what's possible behind the wheel.

Like most of the hit follow-ups, the plot of "Fast & Furious 4" is by no means novel or fresh.

It's so easy to follow that even teenage audiences won't get lost through its twists and turns. But that's only a minor complaint.

This 107-minute fourth installment deserves big rounds of applause for its intense action sequences, high-energy visuals, spectacular stunts, personable characters and groovy soundtracks.

And the most thrilling and exciting part, undisputedly, goes to those frenetic car chase and race scenes - the roaring crowd, saucy girls, cool drivers, slick cars, revving engines, pulse-pounding sound and hot music - almost everything you can expect from a typical car-themed extravaganza.

Sparked by intensive dialogue and packed with action, the dynamic chemistry between the two leads - Diesel and Walker, also helps to infuse a strong force of charisma into the central characters.

This makes them flawed and accessible with a highlight of friendship and brotherhood.

"Fast & Furious 4," a Universal Pictures release, is currently screened at major cinemas around the city in English with Chinese subtitles and earns three stars out of five.
