Colorful eels welcome new year

TO celebrate the Year of Snake, Shanghai Ocean Aquarium - one of Asia's largest - is presenting an exhibition of ribbon eels, a beautiful saltwater species with a snake-like appearance.

The eels, native to the Indian and Pacific oceans, will be in Shanghai between February 6 and 28. With a long, thin body and tall dorsal fins, ribbon eels undergo dramatic color changes during their lifetime, making them wonderful additions to New Year celebrations.

The exhibition features the different stages of the eel's growth, which sees it change color according to age and sex. Juveniles and sub-adults are jet black with a yellow dorsal fin, while females are yellow with a black anal fin with white margins on the fins. Adult males are blue with a yellow dorsal fin.

Visitors can also try an interactive quiz and games.

As well as its ribbon eels, the aquarium has many other fascinating residents. From the vantage point of underwater glass tunnels, visitors can get up close to a wide variety of aquatic creatures without getting wet. Among the most popular attractions are the large shark tank and fish feeding performances.
