Delights off the beaten track in quiet Fuxing
IF you're weary of the commercialism and din of busy downtown streets, sometimes it's a good idea to get off the beaten path. While Fuxing Road runs behind
Huaihai Road and, admittedly, gets its fair share of heavy traffic, the route still manages to remain relatively untouched by the frenzied pace of the city.
Walking along the street, you'll find many music shops, quaint boutiques and inviting restaurants in addition to some very local shops. You'll find it's a rather local experience, and also a great way to see a bit of Shanghai off the well-worn tourist track.
Baan Thai certified quality
Since opening in 2006, Baan Thai has become one of the city's popular Thai restaurants for business lunch, dinner, late night drinks, intimate gatherings or corporate events. Guests can choose either the elegant, minimalist indoor or Thai-style outdoor seating to experience an even more relaxing and romantic ambience. The large menu contains some classic items that you would find in many upscale Thai restaurants such as papaya salad, coconut chicken soup, steamed mandarin fish, stir-fried prawn with sweet curry, and red curry duck with pineapple. Four chefs from Thailand paying homage to the traditional roots of Thai cooking bring out the best and true flavor of Thai cuisine. Baan Thai makes a great option for an enjoyable lunch, with its three-course menu rates from 48 yuan to 78 yuan. On Sundays, it offers the varied full menu (at least eight courses for four people) at only 488 yuan. Baan Thai has been presented with a "Thai Select" award from the Thailand Ministry of Commerce. "Thai Select" not only certifies the quality of the food but also the service and atmosphere.

Clements Apartments
This apartment complex comprises five four-story apartment buildings. The roofs are paved with red tiles and fitted with scuttles and the outer walls are painted with rough-finished cement and include sections made of red bricks. The complex was commissioned by a Belgian named Clements and built in 1929. The apartments had a distinctive layout: they included bedrooms and bathrooms, but no individual kitchens; instead, a community dining hall for all the tenants was set in place between two southern buildings. These days the interior is no longer what it was, though the exterior remains largely original.

Blackstone Apartments 1924
Blackstone Apartments built in 1924 is a four-story Baroque-style apartment building with a symmetrical facade. A large porch extends from the structure on the ground floor, supported by double Corinthian columns. The terrace above the porch is formed with three arcs, either convex or concave. The walls and some components are made of black stones, hence the name "Blackstone Apartments." The house was home to the United Nation's General Agency of Postwar Relief after World War II.

140sqm Gallery contrast
Trudging through the narrow and dingy stairway up to the gallery, the bright white door that greets you isn't quite what you would expect. Housed within the dark, almost ominous walls of the historic Blackstone Apartments building, the 140-square-meter Gallery, with its spacious, sparsely decorated and pristine white interior, conveys a relief exactly opposite to the host mansion. Opened since 2007, the gallery showcases both local and international contemporary art and organizes new displays every two months. The current show is La Vie which features paintings based on artists' musings on life. From woodblock prints to oil on canvas works, most of the artworks carry price tags of around 30,000 yuan.
