Dragon Boat Festival fun

DRAGON Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar or on Wednesday this year, is one of the four most important traditional holidays in China. The festival is celebrated with various folk activities, but none are more popular or celebrated than dragon boat racing and eating zongzi - traditional food of rice wrapped in reed leaves - to commemorate great patriotic poet Qu Yuan, (340-278 BC).

Qu, from the Chu kingdom, warned his king about expansionist Qin neighbors. His warning were unheeded and when the capital fell, a distraught Qu drowned himself. According to legend, neighbors rushed to the scene in boats and threw packets of rice into the water to stop fish from eating Qu's body.

As the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday is coming, the city is offering a bounty of festival treats - ranging from cultural and artistic presentations to city and district outing events. This week's planner picks out the best of the many offerings to give you a chance to plan your days and evenings out during the upcoming holiday.
