'From Gesture to Language' exhibition
THE exhibition "From Gesture to Language" makes the connection between conceptual art and traditional techniques of creation.
Organized by Shanghai Rockbund Art Museum, the exhibition features paintings, installation and sculptures created by 26 artists, including Xu Bing, Yan Peiming and Tony Cragg.
"Magic Carpet" is an important representative work created by Xu Bing with his "New English calligraphy." New English calligraphy combines the forms of the Roman alphabet and the structure of Chinese characters, and is read form left to right, form top to bottom, from the outside to the inside. "Magic Carpet" includes four passages from various religious texts that can be read in one direction or in reserve, as well as in spiral order or intervals, thus creating a "magic" square of texts.
"Purple" created by Jenny Holzer is an installation piece made up of 19 curved LED light tubes on which are displayed political texts. These originate from classified military and political data related to US national security. The content concerns the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as details form the Guantanamo detention camp. The texts had been redacted so that some sensitive words have been replaced by "XXX"- which unsettles viewers all the more.

Admission: 15 yuan
