Guide's top 200 restaurant picks

IF you always worry about finding a good restaurant for friends or a family gathering, a handy new guide has been published listing Shanghai's top 200 restaurants.

The "Golden Ganlan Restaurant Guide - Shanghai 2009" details information about the dining environment, parking service, food quality, recommended menus, reservation information and offers professional food reviews.

All the information can help you choose the ideal place for any occasion. The book is classified into the major styles of cooking, such as eight famous Chinese cuisines plus Thai, French, Korean, Italian, Spanish and Austrian.

It also reports on some newly opened restaurants and highlights others with creative dishes.

For example, if you want Japanese food, the guide offers leading options in Shanghai, such as Haiku by Hatsune in Xuhui District. If you seek to share hotpot with the family, choose from Haidilao hotpot, Doulao Fang and Huige seafood hotpot, none of which will disappoint.

Apart from basic information about each restaurant, it also provides facts about average costs per head and whether or not the restaurant has a smoking area.

The restaurants listed were chosen from thousands of Shanghai outlets according to media recommendation, self nomination, customer recommendations and the opinions of expert culinary judges.
