Hunan official jailed over toxic dog meat

AN animal quarantine official in Changde City, Hunan Province, has been jailed for dereliction of duty after 1,500 kilograms of toxic dog meat was found on the market, provincial news portal rednet.cn reported.

The convict surnamed Hu, former deputy director of the Shenliu Township Animal Quarantine Station, was paid 800 yuan (US$125.44) to fabricate health certificates for dogs that were poisoned to death and then sold for their meat, according to Anxiang County People’s Court.

The case dates back to March 2014, according to the court.

Mao Ping, Mao Si and several others killed dogs with poison darts in Changde and Changsha. They then sold the toxic dog meat to wholesale vendor Zhou Deyou for 9 yuan per kilogram.

Zhou charged three dog meat retailers 12 yuan per kilogram. After some simple processing, the retailers then sold the meat for 22 yuan per kilogram.

In four months, nearly 1,500 kilograms of toxic dog meat reached the market while another 2,000 kilograms were seized by police, who had captured 11 people involved in the case.

Last December, they were sentenced from eight to 18 months in prison and had implicated Hu.
