Jazz chanteuse Jasmine Chen at JZ Club
JAZZ musician and songwriter Jasmine Chen, together with Jianyi Huang and special guest Toby Mak, who plays the trumpet, will perform at JZ Club tonight, starting at 9:30pm.
Born into a family of professional folk dancers and actors, Shanghai native Chen was groomed to be a concert pianist but fell in love with jazz while studying at the prestigious Leeds College of Music in England. In a review, the Guardian called her “a soft and sensuous sounding Chinese chanteuse.” She returned to China in 2005 to follow this passion, mixing China’s rich musical heritage with the world of jazz.
She has since become one of China’s leading figures in the jazz scene, combining Western songs with original Chinese lyrics. Her unique perspective introduces one world to the other, bridging the gap between traditional Chinese songs and the Western jazz legacy.
This rare talent for moving between two worlds and picking the best of what they have to offer has gained her a strong following. Chen has charmed audiences around the world, from the intimate stage of Shanghai’s JZ Club to the big lights of Rotterdam’s Northsea Jazz Festival.
