Lithuanian company presents Anna Karenina
THE Anzelika Cholina Dance Theater from Lithuania will stage contemporary version of “Anna Karenina” on May 26 and 27 at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.
Performing for the first time in Asia, Cholina’s “Anna Karenina” is a sensational experience that dives into Leo Tolstoy’s 1878 novel, exploring the themes of hypocrisy, jealousy, faith, fidelity, family, marriage, society, progress, desire and passion of the Russian aristocracy.
Cholina, the Lithuanian choreographer and theater director, has a rich and beautiful ballet vocabulary that combines narrative with both dance and acting. Her first chorographical work “Medea” at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre was awarded the Saint Christopher’s Prize.
She was also awarded the Golden Cross of the Stage for the best choreography twice — for “Othello” in 2006 and “Anna Karenina” in 2011.
The contemporary ballet features music by Schnittke, Tchaikovsky, Mahler and Webber with stage design by Marijus Jacovskis and costume design by Juozas Statkevicius.
