Serving free lunch
DENG Fei's online store Free Lunch for Children was launched last week on Tmall.com, as a key link in a plan to provide free lunches to needy children who cannot afford them.
In March he started his plan for Free Lunch for Children on weibo. It collects donations to finance lunch for children in poor rural areas. Deng said 13 million yuan has been donated.
The money has been using to build canteens, hire employees of canteens, and purchase food.
So far, the plan covers 26 primary schools in Guizhou, Hunan, Henan, Yunnan and Guangdong provinces.
At the store, Internet users can buy virtual lunches priced at 3 yuan (46 US cents) each. Monthly lunches for one child can be purchased for 66 yuan; a year's worth of school lunches costs 600 yuan.
People also can donate by taking part in online charity auctions of celebrities' goods at the store. So far more than 500 items from domestic celebrities have been collected.
Donations can be made on the Free Lunch official website (www.mianfeiwucan.org).
All of the donations will be transferred to schools in a transparent way so that everything can be tracked on the official website and online store, according to the store's website.
Early the year Deng was inspired to start the program when a teacher in Guizhou Province told him that most children in poor areas could not afford lunch during school.
He learned about similar hardship in many rural areas. More helpers, volunteers, media, businesses and NGOs are getting involved through weibo.
In September the program is expected to move to poor areas of northwest China.
