Shanghai Light Industrial Products Exhibition
HAVE you ever tried riding a five-kilogram bicycle? Do you know how to fold an electric bike in one second? These everyday miracles and many more are realized at the third Shanghai Light Industrial Products Exhibition, which runs through tomorrow at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.
The exhibition, covering 6,600 square meters, features more than 20,000 light industrial products by 130 famous companies in Shanghai.
For many years the city has been famed for light industry development, manufacturing and branding, and the label "Made in Shanghai" enjoys great renown.
An aim of this exhibition is to make "Designed in Shanghai" equally famous.
In past times, a young Chinese man looking to marry had first to have the si da jian - "the four things that go round." This quartet of essentials to finding a wife were a Forever bicycle, a Red Light radio, a Butterfly sewing machine and a Shanghai watch.
Now even these iconic brands are undergoing changes. The Shanghai Watch company, founded in the 1970s, has more than 40 stylish designs - many aimed at young customers. And Butterfly now has a multifunctional digital machine, letting users sew patterns just by drawing them on the screen.
Looking further afield, the exhibition also features items from China's Shenzhou spacecraft program, including taikonauts' boots and underclothes, specially-made pens and watches, plus transmission equipment.
Date: Today, 9am-4:30pm; Tomorrow, 9am-2pm
