Soak up low-key Hunan Road

HUNAN Road is mostly residential so its highlights are not as commercial or as obvious as in other streets. However it's always good to have some quiet time and, compared to jostling with aggressive shoppers on busier roads, you can take a breather and enjoy the peaceful, unflustered walk. On the way, you'll find sprawling residential compounds and random shops or businesses quite unlike what you're accustomed to in Shanghai. The road is good for a breezy summer stroll and if you start from the back, you'll end up at the Shanghai Library, the largest public library in China and one of the world's biggest.

Cashmere House

The large, brightly hued reels of yarn that line the walls of Cashmere House give the shop most of its color. The space in the rest of the shop is taken up by racks of clothes and other smaller piles of cashmere knits, so customers can sift through the ready-made pieces for something to their liking. Otherwise, there's also the option of tailoring, by which you can pretty much get anything made -- from tops to innerwear, to accessories like hats or socks, and even replicate designer styles. The one-year-old shop uses cashmere from Italy and is a favorite among expatriates who know of the Italian brand.

Le Bistro de l'Ouest

The red house on the corner of the street stands out from the sea of white that lines the rest of the route. With its pocket-sized kitchen, small and handwritten menu, this French restaurant is hardly what you'd expect of typical French posh nosh. Yet looks can be deceiving, and the food served offers the French living in Shanghai a slice of home. The Foie Gras d'oie au Touchon (100 yuan) is homemade, and Poisson au Grossel (150 yuan) is a very traditional French dish where the fish is covered with sea salt, then baked in the oven, keeping the meat extremely tender. Most ingredients are imported from France, such as the Escargots (120 yuan for 12), and special seafood dishes need to be ordered in advance.

Hunan Villa

Built in 1931, Hunan Villa is a Spanish-style garden villa. Over the years, the three-story bungalow has been residence to famous persons like late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping and Chinese military commander and politician Chen Yi. Second wife of late Chairman Mao Zedong, He Zizhen, also lived in the villa until her death in 1984. The sloped eaves on the first story are red tiled and the second story has a double-columned long corridor. On the third story, the windows feature stone arches. The structure also has a gable roof, as well as archways for its windows and doors.

Paddy Field

For those who'd like to have an Asian themed home, Paddy Field would be a good starting point. The home furnishing and interior design store imports and custom manufactures furniture, mostly Bali-styled. The furniture, like day beds, chests and sofas is wood-based, using elm from China and teak from Myanmar, and most of them feature intricate carvings, attesting to the meticulous workmanship. Smaller home furnishing accessories are also available, such as ornaments, vases, lamps and cushions. The limited space in the shop means the layout and display of items is rather cramped and chaotic, so looking for something to buy for home is somewhat like searching through a cave for treasure.
