ABOUT 1,000 guests were amazed by Alfred Dunhill's 2012 global menswear presentation "Trafalgar" in Shanghai. As if in a giant snow globe, the British luxury men's brand showcased the timelessness of the collection on 64 Asian models, standing on "Trafalgar Square" in a simulation of all four seasons that take place in a single day. From a classic one-button navy wool suit and a burgundy or midnight blue velvet dinner jacket to a travel-friendly blazer, function and performance came to the fore but never at the expense of elegance.
And, some simple but effective layering, like the addition of a shearling lining in a silk bomber jacket, mirrored the never-ending cycle of the changing seasons. A full year of weather condensed over one day was created by one of the longest single CGI sequences ever made, the magic of a holographic projection, mixing the physical with the unphysical. The experience was further heightened by the perfection of a smell, inspired by the natural scent created after it rains.
