Swedish winter tradition takes place in Shanghai
A traditional Swedish Lucia celebration will be held at Shanghai Center on December 1.
With a history of more than 250 years, the festival in memory of Saint Lucia of Syracuse is held every year on December 13, when Swedish girls and boys wearing white robes and wreaths on their heads go on a parade holding lit candles and singing carols.
Lucia is an important part of Swedish culture, which derives from the country’s ancient agrarian culture and celebrates light during the cold, dark Nordic winter.
At this year’s Lucia celebration in Shanghai, children from the Swedish Choir, students from the Swedish school in Shanghai and Chinese students majoring in Swedish language at a local university will present a choir performance and hold a parade.
Swedish company Ikea will provide a traditional Luciafika, a Swedish Christmas tea break with snacks like Lussekatter (saffron buns), gingerbread bookies and mulled wine.
Date: December 11, 4:30-6pm
Venue: Shanghai Center
Address: 11/F, 376 Nanjing Rd W.
