TCM Treasures - Niuxi 牛膝草

Niuxi (the root of bientate achyranthes) is a herb that is recommended in the winter to help the kidneys while also strengthening bones and tendons.

It is said it was once a secret prescription of an experienced TCM doctor who cured many patients with it. The doctor decided to pass on the prescription to a good apprentice when he was old. The doctor's other apprentices had treated him poorly after discovering he was without money. Only his youngest apprentice treated him well, even after learning he was poor and ill. The doctor gave the young apprentice his secret herb and taught him how to use it. The apprentice didn't fail the doctor and saved many lives with it. He named it "niu xi" (bull knee) based on its shape.

Niuxi is a "neutral" herb that helps activate blood and energy circulation, reinforces the kidneys and liver, strengthens bones and tendons. It also promotes urination and helps guide blood flowing downwards. It is often prescribed for irregular or painful menstruation. It is also good for people with lower back and knee pain, and urinary problems due to deficiency in the kidneys. It can also help relieve toothache, headache or sore throat due to an ascending "fire" problem.

It should not be used by pregnant women and those with profuse menstruation.
