Take a breath, and stop to smell all those tulips

THE flower season has arrived and the mercury is climbing. If you are looking for a nice place for a weekend break, Bajie Garden in Kunshan, a satellite city in Suzhou, may be a good choice.

The garden is holding a tulip festival, where visitors can enjoy more than 2.8 million tulip plants of 64 varieties from the Netherlands, along with one million other flowers such as hyacinth.

Named by Peng Liyuan, wife of President Xi Jinping, in the Netherlands in 2014, Cathay tulips catch the most attention. “Cathay” is the old name of China in the Netherlands.

In Chinese, translated as guotai, the name means “prosperous country.”

The colorful flower has uniquely dark purple petals with feathery leaf edges.

Apart from flower blossoms, visitors can try to compost their own tulips and sample Dutch and Chinese snacks. A kids’ playground inside the park will make it easier for families.

The festival will run through early May. Visitors can get three free tulips to take home with a valid entry ticket.

Date: Through May 5, 9am-5:30pm

Ticket: 25-35 yuan (Free entry to children under 1.4 meters and seniors over 60 years)

Venue: Bajie Garden (North Garden)

Address: Bajie Garden, Bacheng Town, Kunshan, Suzhou
