The sweet notes of sitar

HEAD to the Shanghai Center Theater next Saturday for an evening of seductive sitar performance by one of India’s new generation of classical musicians.
Niladri Kumar was born in a family of musicians and showed promise at the tender age of four in playing the sitar, a traditional string instrument. He gave his first public performance at the age of six and released his first album with his famous father, Pandit Kartick Kumar, at the age of 15.
This year’s Chaiti Arts Festival will host him in Shanghai on May 20, and in Beijing on May 24. Kumar will be accompanied on the tabla, an Indian percussion instrument, by Vijay Ghate.
The evening will also include a dance performance by Beijing native Jin Shanshan, who is also known as Eesha. Jin has mastered Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form from southern India. She has been visiting India for over a decade to learn the skills from her mentor Leela Samson. It will be her first performance in Shanghai.
