Versions of a united world: Asia and Europe
THE exhibition of Asia-Europe classic prints entitled “The United World of Version” has opened to the public at Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum.
It presents 275 masterpieces of Asia-Europe classic prints from the 16th century to the 21st century, including 74 Chinese prints from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), 142 Japanese Ukiyo-e prints and 59 European copper plate etching and woodblock paintings. Among them 216 are original works and the rest are duplicates.
The exhibited Chinese prints feature Fengxiang New Year woodblock prints and Taohuawu New Year woodblock prints. Both credited as national intangible cultural heritage, the former one originated in Shaanxi Province presenting themes like folk stories, lifestyles, customs, traditional operas and fairy tales while the later one was from Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, which not only embodies urban people’s lifestyles at ancient times but also helps to accelerate cultural exchanges between the Oriental and the West.
Ukiyo-e, literally “pictures of the floating world,” is a genre of Japanese art showing subjects such as female beauties, landscapes and flora. The exhibition displays respected art works from renowned Ukiyo-e masters like Suzuki Harunobu (1725-70), Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) and Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861).
In the European parts, the exhibits include representative works from Albrecht Durer (1471-1528), Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-69) and Francisco Jose de Goya y Lucientes (1746-1828), focusing on thmes like religions, wars, history and portraits.
Visitors can enjoy the collection of characteristic staples from Asia and Europe and get to know the art history of printmaking.
