Art brand hosts show for talented trio
PAINTINGS and calligraphy works by local artists Shi Zhongping, Zeng Xiulong and Leng Hong were showcased this week at the Shanghai office of Marie’s, a Chinese manufacturer of art supplies. The exhibition is part of celebrations for the brand’s 97th anniversary.
All graduates of the art school of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, the three artists developed their own styles while carrying on the essence of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy.
Shi pushes the boundaries of Chinese painting by experimenting with paper materials and chemicals. His lotus series features withering flowers in late summer, with gold blended with a patina of green, the result his experimentation with pigments.
Leng blends Western oil painting techniques in his latest works on Chinese rice paper. Unlike his previous works with clear lines and strokes, his latest pieces have a strong sense of dimness.
“I’d like to have some breakthroughs,” said the artist. “I try to add something into my original style. At first it was total chaos. Yet it is an interesting thing to gradually sort it out.”
Zeng’s calligraphy works are often compared to Chinese martial arts. He embeds coherence into the seemingly chaotic writings.
The exhibition ends today.
