Exhibition brings modern, classic artwork to Nanjing
THE Second Nanjing International Art Exhibition is currently on display at the Nanjing International Exhibition Center until September 26.
This year’s event — which is centered around the theme of “A Beautiful New World” — features classic and contemporary art from all over the world.
The exhibition is divided into four special display areas.
The display “Salute to the Masters” features 50 original works from the likes of world-renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse and Auguste Rodin.
Meanwhile, a display area entitled “Themed Exhibition,” curated by Zhu Tong, the director of the Avant Garde Contemporary Art Center, features examples of contemporary artwork inspired by the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. Many of these works also incorporate themes related to the Internet age, as well as experimental techniques across a variety of media and forms.
Italian curator Eleonora Battiston focuses on the development of contemporary art around the world in her “Otherness” display. This area confronts several controversial and sensitive topics, including racism, sexual abuse, corruption and consumerism.
An exhibition area entitled “Contemporary China Inkline,” curated by Xia Kejun, explores new horizons in Chinese ink-wash painting and calligraphy. This area also features installations that showcase the future of these expressive traditional arts and modern design.
Finally, in “Multi-Colored Contemporary,” organizers sourced pieces from 500 artists around the world. These works cover a multitude of genres and forms.
During the opening day of the exhibition, some 95 artists from China and abroad were awarded by organizers for their contributions to the arts. Chinese artists Cui Youwen and Su Xinping were among those honored.
