‘Merchant of Venice’ to hit stage in Shanghai

THE UK’s Globe Theatre brings their production of “The Merchant of Venice” to Shanghai in September as part of a global tour that also includes scheduled stops in Beijing and Guangzhou.

Starring Olivier and Tony award winner Jonathan Pryce as Shylock, and Rachel Pickup as Portia, this new production of Shakespeare’s play premiered at Shakespeare’s Globe in April 2015. This classic play focuses on competing claims of tolerance and intolerance, religious law and civil society, justice and mercy.

Shakespeare’s Globe is a reconstruction of the Globe Theatre, an Elizabethan playhouse on the south bank of the River Thames that was originally built in 1599. Shakespeare’s Globe has become a unique international resource dedicated to the exploration of Shakespeare’s work and the playhouse for which he wrote, through the connected means of performance and education.

The play will be performed in English with Chinese subtitles. The running time is two hours and 50 minutes, including a 20-minute intermission.
