Minhang offers more than Shanghai Masters

The highly anticipated ATP1000 Shanghai Masters returns to the Qizhong Tennis Center for its eleventh edition from October 5 to 13. As one of the grandest sports gatherings in Shanghai, the Masters also offers a perfect opportunity to explore and experience the charms of Minhang District.

“The Realm Beyond Sculptures — Zhang Yongqian’s Zisha ceramic Sculptures Exhibition” inside the Qizhong Tennis Center is being held by the Culture and Tourism Bureau of Minhang. The 36 pieces of zisha ceramic sculptures on display are created by Zhang Yongqian, a sculptor with an extraordinary 30-year career in this field. Most of his works feature vivid and dynamic figures while leaving ample space for the imagination of the viewer.

Zhang was happy to meet with Shanghai Daily to introduce this unique art and its creation process. “It usually takes around a year to finish a piece of work, from changing the textures, shaping, molding to firing. Each of these procedures requires sophisticated artistry and great patience.” Hence, zisha ceramic sculptures are highly expressive in terms of their textures and colors.

Apart from the traditional crafts, recent years has also witnessed the prosperity and development of Minhang’s cultural and creative industry.

MJ389 cultural park, listed as a cultural and creative industry park at the municipal level, and a National 3A tourist scenic spot, brings together multiple renowned brands with their products to the tennis center, such as the Creative Alliance, Carton King, Qingmu Tang and Qingmu workshop.

Visitors can also see exquisite Shanghai traditional musical instruments exhibited by Shanghai No. 1 National Musical Instrument Factory. Among them are a set of pocket-size musical instruments, which were awarded as “Shanghai-preferred characteristic souvenirs” this year. The art of making these instruments has been listed as national intangible cultural heritage.

Furthermore, Minhang also has their eyes on the future. Located in the south of Qizhong Tennis Center, Shanghai Maqiao Artificial Intelligence Innovation Pilot Zone is under development.

Off the court, there is much more to explore, from art events to cultural and historic attractions.

The Maqiao Culture Exhibition Hall features an immersive experience space, where virtual reality and other technologies help bring back the area’s ancient culture.

Powerlong Museum, located at the core of Qibao Business Ecology Zone in Minhang District, is now holding the exhibitions “MOTSE: Over and Over Again,” a new media art world tour; and “One If by Land.” The museum takes “carrying forward the essence of traditional culture and promoting the development of contemporary art” as its tenet and is rated among the top 10 galleries in Asia.

Shanghai-style Cultural and Creative store on Qibao Old Street is the second branch of this brand in Shanghai. The first store is located at the China Art Museum. At present, more than 78 culture and museum-related units and cultural and creative enterprises are in the shop, stocking about 1,900 products.
