Rosefeldt’s installations, photos on show in Pudong

HOW Art Museum is presenting Julian Rosefeldt’s works as its inaugural exhibition until the end of the year.

It is Rosefeldt’s, a German artist and filmmaker, first large-scale institutional solo show in China’s mainland since 2012. The exhibition showcases important aspects of Rosefeldt’s works over the past 12 years, including the recent and well-known film installation “Manifesto.”

The exhibition comprises of five film installations and 21 photo works. “Manifesto” is a unique work starring Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett.

Rosefeldt collages brand-new manifestos of the 21st century with his drawings on many original texts from important manifestos, throughout the Modernism of 20th century.

The artist criticizes the capitalist society which pursues capitalism as the emerging religion and even the cultural field around the world through the work.

Manifesto (2015) is a 13-channel film installation that pays homage to the moving tradition and literary beauty of artists’ manifestos. Manifesto draws on the writings of Futurists, Dadaists and other artist groups, as well as the musings of individual artists, architects, dancers and filmmakers.

Passing the ideas of Kazimir Malevich, Andre Breton, Jim Jarmusch and other influencers through his lens, Rosefeldt has edited and reassembled 13 collages of artists’ manifestos.

Performing this “manifesto of manifestos” as a contemporary call to action, while inhabiting 13 different personas — among them a school teacher, a newsreader and a homeless man — Australian actress Cate Blanchett imbues new, dramatic life into both famous and lesser known words within unexpected contexts. Often written in youthful rage, they not only express the wish to change the world through art but also reflect the voice of a generation. Manifesto questions whether the words have withstood the passage of time and how the dynamics between politics, art and life have shifted.

Located in the Pudong New Area, HOW Art Museum is a brand-new cultural institution which boasts multiple functions including exhibition, research and education. The museum also consists of a Design Center, Sculpture Park and International Curatorial Residency Program.
