Two shows from choreographer moved by life鈥檚 鈥榤ystery鈥
CANADIAN choreographer Marie Chouinard is bringing two of her most acclaimed productions, “The Rite of Spring” and “24 Preludes by Chopin” to Shanghai’s Daning Theatre next month.
Chouinard founded her own company, Compagnie Marie Chouinard, in 1990 after 12 years as dancer and choreographer on the world stage. She has choreographed more than 50 dances for soloists and groups, winning numerous awards.
Chouinard’s source of inspiration is the body itself. She wrote in 2000 that the root of each new work is what she calls the “mystery,” an unknown wavelength that calls out to her in an almost obsessive manner.
Chouinard’s interpretation of the classic “The Rite of Spring” captures the great synchronism of nature.
The 50-minute piece was created in 1993 and occupies a special position in the artist’s repertoire. The avant-garde work allowed Chouinard to find an original pulsation that’s essential to her movement.
The 45-minute “24 Preludes by Chopin,” on the other hand, used a different approach to interpret the poetic music by one of the greatest composers of all time. The choreography blends contemporary elements in the dances to create a pure and vigorous world for the audience.
Anna Kisselgoff of The New York Times praised Chouinard for taking her creativity to an impressive, higher level in “24 Preludes by Chopin” in 2003.
