A hidden gem offering eclectic attractions

SHAOXING Road is a small, quiet street which connects the much busier Shaanxi Road S. with Ruijin Road No.2. The beautiful trees which line the pavement, plus a small, traditional Chinese park, provide a relaxing respite from the hustle and bustle of Shanghai's city center. A popular spot for handmade goods, with many shops specializing in leatherware and shoe manufacturing, Shaoxing Road offers an eclectic mix of fashion boutiques, quaint cafes and retro bookshops. This small street is a somewhat hidden gem in the heart of Shanghai, with a surprising amount on offer.

Maison de Manne et Sante

Maison de Manne et Sante is a surprising discovery on Shaoxing Road which includes an alluring continental bakery on the first floor and a restaurant upstairs offering southern France cuisine. The restaurant has a cozy, homely vibe with wooden furniture and French windows that let in natural light. All the food is prepared on-site using fresh and authentic ingredients. Popular dishes include gizzard confit and green salad for 78 yuan (US$12.3), duck leg confit (78 yuan), French-style beef and red wine stew (128 yuan) and Napoli pizza (38 to 88 yuan). House wine is available for 30 yuan per glass. Maison de Manne et Sante is a great choice for a relaxed lunch. A choice of one salad, sandwich or pasta costs from 58 to 158 yuan. Add 35 yuan and choose two items from cake, coffee or fresh juice.

Handmade Leather Goods

Handmade Leather Goods is a tiny boutique, situated in the front-corner of a small courtyard. It has a classic, retro-style interior, accented by a vintage-style leather sofa and armchair. The boutique has been open for more than a year and specializes in handmade leather goods such as notebook covers, iPod covers and purses, as well as some larger handbags. The majority of the leather used is imported from Italy and Korea, with some pieces made from local leather. Small purses are priced around 280 yuan with larger wallets priced on sale for around 1,880 yuan, depending on style and the quality of the leather. The pieces on offer are to a high standard and use fashionable, simple designs which complement a variety of different styles and tastes. Additionally, there is an option for custom-made goods. In-house designs changes regularly and items sell fast, so pre-ordering is recommended.

Xi Yang Jing

Open just over a month, Xi Yang Jing is a small boutique which offers a selection of vintage and antique homeware, collected from Europe, America and Australia. While some pieces are more than 100 years old, they are in very good condition. Xi Yang Jing offers a wide selection of oil lamps and overhead light fixtures ?many of which use colored glass and ornate styles ?with prices ranging from 400 yuan to more than 1,000 yuan. A J&J Hopkinson piano, dating from 1855, is a particular focal point of the boutique, as the classic beauty and style of the instrument have been wonderfully preserved. In addition, there are several classical gramophones, priced between 18,000 and 20,000 yuan, as well as a wide selection of porcelain plates. Several plates in the collection are limited edition pieces, including some which were designed to commemorate Princess Diana and royal weddings. Xi Yang Jing is perfect for those with a passion for objects from days gone by and will appeal to the collector within. It also provides a lovely contrast to the fast pace of life in a modern city.

Chuan Kai Lai

Chuan Kai Lai is a handmade footwear boutique which has been open for six years and specializes in high-quality riding boots. It offers a wide range of styles and leathers, with a particular focus on classic European styles. Many of the designs are simple yet elegant. The leather is imported from Germany and Italy. There is a large selection of colors from which to choose and a choice of more than 100 styles. The majority of the shoes are custom-made, and there is the option to bring in your own design, as Chuan Kai Lai says it aims to cater to all style preferences. Women's shoes priced at 500 yuan and above, while men's shoes retail for between 1,300 and 1,600 yuan. The riding boots, for which Chuan Kai Lai is particularly well-known, are made using German leather, which is renowned for its strength and durability. The owner of the shop was trained in Japan, specializing in the art of boot-making, and now regularly exports riding boots to Japanese retailers. Chuan Kai Lai's riding boots are priced between 2,600 and 2,800 yuan, depending on the style and leather used. While on the higher end of the price spectrum, Chuan Kai Lai is an authentic footwear manufacturer and places particular emphasis on the quality and durability of its products.
