A place for good taste

Not long ago, Fumin Road was a typical Shanghai street with local groceries dotted both sides. But a recent visit to this road revealed that it has become a much-visited destination for fashion as well as good food. So put on your walking shoes, and enjoy the distinctive charms of this wonderful Shanghai neighborhood. Allow yourself a treat at one of the Vietnamese eateries on the road, or try out the new Hong Kong hot pot establishment or all-time favorite Gu Yi serving up Hunan cuisine. For the fans of fashion, don't miss leading local designer Helen Lee's new boutique where you can find her latest creations using lightweight materials ideal for the city's super-hot summers. Despite trendy shops opening one after another on this street, you can still observe the daily life of the authentic Shanghainese who live in this neighborhood.

Pho Asia

Fumin Road has some of the best Vietnamese fare in town. Pho Asia on the section between Yan'an and Julu roads offers fresh, delicious Vietnamese and Thai delicacies at reasonable prices in a relaxing atmosphere. Pho is the most recommended here: it has all the qualities a healthy eater would look for. With nine kinds of Pho on offer, the restaurant uses the finest beef and ingredients such as onions, basil leaves and fresh limes to give their rich flavorful broth that unique aroma and taste which can only be described as irresistible. They also offer another 14 kinds of Asian noodles such as Singapore laksa with prawns (38 yuan/US$5.85) and stick noodles with beef tendon balls in tom yam soup (32 yuan). There is also a variety of Vietnamese and Thai little dishes priced from 20 to 58 yuan, including spicy chicken shredded with green papaya salad, spicy pork salami salad and prawn mousse on sugarcane stick. At Pho Asia, you can experience how delicious authentic Southeast Asian food can be.

B Real Vietnamese Sandwich Cafe

Found further up the street, this cafe offers another Vietnamese cuisine favorite, Banh Mi. The distinctiveness of these sandwiches not only lies within the French-influenced baguette, but also the flavor-packed savory fillings that make it so delicious. B Real offers six types of sandwiches with tasty fillings such as Korean hot and spicy shredded chicken (55 yuan) and Shanghainese-stewed pork belly slices with egg (55 yuan). The most popular one is a combination of Vietnamese BBQ pork and sausages (55 yuan). The B Real Combo includes a choice of Vietnamese sandwich, honey lime coleslaw or Pho Real beef soup, plus any soft drink if you add 15 yuan. Another highlight of the eatery is their signature sauces: Vietnamese lime honey mayonnaise, B Real's garlic sriracha mayo and tropical passion fruit hoisin sauce. They import all the Vietnamese ingredients directly from Vietnam and sell authentic Vietnamese fish sauce (30 yuan), rice noodles (30 yuan) and vermicelli (30 yuan).

Helen Lee Boutique

Shanghai fashion designer Helen Lee recently relocated her flagship store from Taikang Road to Fumin Road. When displayed among the pure, white-colored walls and reclaimed wood furniture, Lee's bright and colorful ready-to-wear spring-summer collection's dramatic effect on the eyes is maximized. The famous local designer's new collection proudly reflects a Shanghai lifestyle by using lightweight materials such as silk, organza and sheer fabrics. She calls the concept "see-through construction" because the transparent fabrics she uses show off how her pieces are made. The cool -- in more ways than one - clothes are ideal for wearing at work and play during Shanghai's sweltering summer months. Prices range from 300 yuan for a tee to 6,000 yuan for cocktail dresses.

The Pottery Workshop

The Pottery Workshop is part of a nationwide ceramic art education center. With a presence in Shanghai since 2002, the Fumin Road store was opened to offer a cross section of some of the best hand-made ceramics. The store features hand-crafted ceramic art of all types including wood, soda and reduction-fired porcelain and stoneware from 15 Chinese and five international designers. They also carry sculpture and ceramic wall art. The least expensive cups are 10 yuan while the most expensive vases are 58,000 yuan. The store also offers a range of high-end mixed media sculptures that are between 150,000 to 180,000 yuan. The best-sellers are functional pots by Chinese designer Wu Hao and international designers Caroline Cheng and Muira Junji. They average around 200 yuan per piece. Their Pottery Workshop studio located on Shaanxi Road S. offers classes for adults and children.
