Always something new

THIS week's Sunday stroll starts from the corner of Wulumuqi Road and Anfu Road and heads south along Wulumuqi Road for two blocks to Fuxing Road W. Turn right and continue the walk. Slow your pace and inhale the fresh smell of the leafy trees -- it's the best time of the year to visit these tree-lined roads in the former French concession area. Several new places have sprouted up including a vintage shop, as well as ethnic-style jewelry and clothing stores. There's also a few hidden, charming eateries that make authentic cuisine. This ever-changing area boasts some of Shanghai's newest and most chic attractions. It's always pleasant to walk and shop a little, then duck in for a memorable meal.

Nostalgia reigns at eclectic shop

Taking inspiration from a garage sale, the Cottage Shop sells things owner Mike Liu has collected from all over the world. Opened a month ago, the shop strives to bring freshness and curiosity to all customers. Vintage old-Shanghai style cabinets retain their original beauty and are priced at around 10,000 yuan (US$1,564). Polariod lovers can buy film here or buy an old Polaroid camera for a few hundred yuan.

The eclectic shop offers a large variety of items for your home. Here you can buy some European-style tableware priced at 20 yuan to 360 yuan. The shop owner has good taste in lifestyle items. He also designs his own line of eco bags, priced at 50 yuan each. Some of the local designers' pieces are also on sale, including handmade shoes (480 yuan to 580 yuan) and jewelry accessories (58 yuan and above).

Jewelry and clothing with a natural look

Meido Handcraft opened in 2006 and sells unique hand-crafted accessories and clothing inspired by China's ethnic minorities. Accessories are designed and made by the owner.

She uses silver, wood and stone to make understated, natural-looking necklaces, earrings and rings. The average price of a necklace is 250 yuan. Dangly earrings also keep it simple. Earrings range from around 48 yuan to 300 yuan. Customers can also choose from all kinds of materials to design their own accessories. Loose-fitting clothing made from pure cotton, linen and hemp, priced at 200 yuan to 700 yuan, is well received by those who appreciate simple designs. Tailor-made service is provided. There are also Chinese minority embroidered bags, which cost around 500 yuan.

Spicy creations from Hunan

Hunan House, one of the few Chinese restaurants in this area, is bound to impress you with spicy and sophisticated Hunan cuisine. Opened last August, this restaurant delivers classic Hunan dishes in a three-story lane house tucked down an alley on Fuxing Road W. Mashed eggplant (32 yuan) is served in traditional wooden bowls. Spicy shredded roast duck (48 yuan), the spiciest dish on the menu, will definitely please those who like it hot. After a lot of spice, you can cool down, so to speak, with various none-spicy vegetable dishes and desserts. Most ingredients are sourced from Hunan Province. Customers can ask for less spicy versions of dishes. For drinks, white wine is recommended. Basic cocktails and a house wine is also served. The average cost for dinner including drinks is around 120 yuan to 180 yuan.

A taste of the Mediterranean

After entering the Spanish restaurant Mistral, you may feel as though you've entered a fisherman's house over the Mediterranean Sea. White walls, wooden floors, a lot of candles and intimate space provide privacy. Since opening in May, it has attracted loyal followers who like to share tapas and wine. But the chef is updating the menu, changing the concept to offer more simple, traditional Mediterranean food. Favorites include seafood paella (230 yuan for two) and goat cheese (110 yuan for large size). They will soon introduce new dishes such as lamb jarret with ajo arriero (198 yuan). The average cost for dinner is 200 yuan to 250 yuan without drinks. A weekend brunch includes assorted tapas, seafood paella, dessert and free-flowing sangria for 258 yuan per adult and 88 yuan per child.

Opening hours: 5pm-12pm (Monday); 12am-12pm (Tuesday to Friday); 11am-12pm (weekends)

Address: 133 Fuxing Rd W.
