Coffee, collectables and Vietnamese cuisine

WHERE Wulumuqi Road M. meets Fuxing Road W., there are a surprising number of new boutiques and restaurants on offer. These include lifestyle and jewelry boutiques, as well as relaxing coffee and tea shops. Several dining options offer a variety of cuisines. Fuxing Road is a busy part of the former French concession, while the various boutiques and cafes that line the street offer a more peaceful side to Shanghai.

Bolaven Cafe

Bolaven Cafe is a small coffee shop situated on the corner of Fuxing Road and Wulumuqi Road, offering coffees and teas with the option to sit in or take away. It can seat up to 10 people and the atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful. While the cafe is a cosy spot, the main aim of the venture is to raise awareness of the coffee beans used, which are also sold separately.

Bolaven coffee is grown in southern Laos and is part of a socio-economic rejuvenation project which aims to provide Laotian farmers with the education, incentive and capacity to produce high-quality coffee beans using sustainable methods. The project was started in 2006 by Laotian refugee and businessman, Sam Say. Say aims to establish a future for Laotian farmers, providing them with a means of making their own money and success. There is also a heavy emphasis on quality; all the coffee sold at Bolaven Cafe is organic and fair trade.

Bolaven Cafe coffees are priced at between 15 (US$ 2.3) and 30 yuan. Also available are several teas and healthy drink options - including sanqi flower and oolong tea. There are also several Bolaven coffee shops in Hong Kong and Malaysia, each non-profit with the specific purpose of promoting the coffee bean. Bolaven Cafe provides delicious coffee, a beautiful environment and provides an opportunity to support Laotian coffee farmers.

Most of the jewelry on offer is classic and sophisticated in style. The pieces are beautiful and unique, yet understated. More opulent pieces display an array of bright items set in shiny metal.

Many pieces are the perfect daytime accessory, which will draw the eye and complement an outfit.

Prices are reasonable, ranging from 100 to around 2,000 yuan, with the majority of pieces costing around 350 yuan. The boutique is still in its soft opening stage and is well worth a look.

Pho Real

Pho Real Vietnamese restaurant on Fuxing Road M. stands out for its authentic and original food, clean, distinctive interior and an extensive menu.

This is the second Pho Real outlet after the first on Fumin Road, taking their name from pho, the famous Vietnamese noodle soup, usually served with beef. It's a favorite here. The simple set lunch for 55-68 yuan includes a starter and mains, usually with three or four options, such as signature pho, cold rice vermicelli or a Vietnamese sandwich.

Traditional Vietnamese spring roll, another option for mains, is served with cold noodles, chopped chilli and fresh herbs such as basil and mint. The a-la-carte menu has a lot to offer, including appetizers, salads, specialty vegetables, noodle soups, cold vermicelli and all kinds of deserts.
