Distinctive style in a street where old meets new
Between Fumin Road and Shaanxi Road S. is Xinle Road, which has a modern but still historic feel. Part of the former French concession, Xinle Road is home to many fashion boutiques, plus distinctive restaurants and cafes. Xinle Road seems to epitomise individuality, being a popular site for shoppers who are looking for quirky and unique styles. Everything from purses to cakes can be found on this street. And being lined with leafy trees gives the area a milder temperature and a relaxing atmosphere. There's a feeling of being transferred back to old Shanghai. This part of Shanghai is remarkable and visitors and residents alike should take their time exploring Xinle Road.
Mo'Laksa
Mo'Laksa, opened a year ago, is one of the few restaurants specializing in Singapore cuisine in the former French concession area. It provides a slick, contemporary vibe for tasting its signature laksa and other southeast Asian staples such as bak kut teh and Hainanese chicken. Laksa lovers will be excited by the good selection on offer here: nine kinds on offer include original prawn laksa for 58 yuan (US$9.1) to 68 yuan, fish dumpling laksa (38/48 yuan) to the most expensive seafood laksa (78 yuan). Other authentic Singapore offerings include Hainan chicken rice (48 yuan), bak kut teh (meat bone tea/48 yuan) and Hokkien prawn mee (Fujian prawn noodles/39 yuan). Aside from the regular laksa bowls, people can choose the 138-yuan super "G" laksa - probably the largest Godzilla-size laksa anywhere. If you finish this noodle soup yourself within 60 minutes, it will be free of charge. The restaurant provides different sets for both lunch and dinner. A choice of Singapore specialty chili crab, curry crab or black pepper crab, plus Hainan chicken rice and sambal morning glory and two drinks only costs 218 yuan for two. For nearby office workers, Mo'Laksa is a popular choice for lunch. A choice of laksa, plus barley water and fruit costs between 38 yuan and 78 yuan.

Yanice
Almost a year ago, Julie Liu opened Yanice on Xinle Road to give cashmere a new, more youthful look. "Most cashmere and wool styles in China seem matronly and more suitable for older people. I wanted to let the younger generation be able to wear these fabrics," said Liu. Currently the clientele is developing and Liu said growing numbers of young people are visiting after hearing about the contemporary take on cashmere. According to the season, new shipments of the work of Chinese and French designers usually arrive every month or two. Styles are unique, said Liu, with colors ranging from pastel blues to coral pinks. All designs feature pure cashmere, wool and silk. Prices range from 700 yuan (US$109.83) to as much as 4,000 yuan.

Heirloom
Among the many fashion shops on Xinle Road, Heirloom stands out by offering customers a bespoke handbag service. Tiffany Wu and Lynn Lu, two young American Asian designers and good friends, have translated their modern attitudes and lifestyles into stylish handbags and leather accessories. And they promise to have just the bag for every customer - whether a career woman, a town socialite, a stylish weekend girl, or indeed all three.
Most of the designs are created with timeless silhouettes and functional touches, with one handbag versatile for different occasions, whether matching daily wear or for a fun evening out. From design to production, the design duo say they have every detail covered. Each bag is hand-made, with the average price around 2,500 yuan (US$392.24). Small leather accessories start from 200 yuan.
In addition, this season Heirloom has introduced a limited edition version of its Veronica bag in three candy color shades. Crafted from printed graphic leather, the top layer uses a hand-cutting technique to create a unique tromp-loi effect. The layering against the colorful hues brings an air of lightness from a must-have statement piece from the Heirloom collection, according to Wu and Lu. The Veronica - which costs 2,190 yuan - can be worn as a shoulder bag, a cross body and used as a party clutch.
