From a quiet street to a bustling center

YONGKANG Road is a real discovery. Located between Taiyuan Road and Jiashan Road, this little road is full of bustle and interesting corners. If you take a stroll there, you could almost be forgiven for thinking you are on a Paris street, complete with a French cafe, bakery and butcher. These help attract many expats to this side of the city. It is hard to believe that this road was once dominated by a wet market and was a place where mostly only locals went to shop. But the quiet street slowly began to transform and now there is a great variety of boutiques, furniture shops and eateries. The latter category includes a new fish and chips restaurant that gives an upmarket twist to the popular dish. With the better weather of spring here, it's nice to go to Yongkang Road after work to enjoy a drink and spend some time with friends.

Time Machine

This fashion retailer featuring Japanese labels opened just a few months ago. Time Machine has more than 10 different Japanese labels, importing directly from Japan. The Chinese owners already had an online shop on the Taobao website and decided to open a little boutique in town. The concept is really easy-going and the garments are aimed at males aged between 14 and 40 -- particularly those who like street fashion. Mastermind Japan and Aoin are the most popular brands among local shoppers. The Time Machine buyers are based in Japan and every week there are new items coming directly from there. Customers who know the brand from the website come to the shop because it offers a great "Japanese" fashion experience. Not only clothes but also shoes, iPhone accessories and various creative and quirky objects are available here. Prices range from 600 yuan (US$95) for a T-shirt to 30,000 yuan for a Mastermind Japan suitcase. In addition to menswear, Time Machine also offers some women's fashion, including the extremely popular TataBaby brand. All in all, it's a great shop for people with a penchant for Japanese style.

Catch

You might be disappointed with Catch, which opened only two months ago, if what you want is the traditional method of making fish and chips. Because Singaporean owner Jerrica Lee aims to provide gourmet fish and chips - a lighter version of the traditional dish - beyond what you would expect in a simple setting. Every day Catch offers three choices of wild-caught fish from New Zealand - such as monkfish, ling and blue cod - and three choices of batter, including backwoods beer, spicy Asian chilies and herbal goodness. The fish is flaky and freshly cooked and the wedges thick-cut and tasty. A 150-gram fish-n-chip set is priced at 60 to 95 yuan and you can add five yuan more for extra crispy batter. A glass of white wine or beer is 40 yuan. The seven-seat street shop is tiny, open and cool - like eating at a wooden kitchen counter. It's not the grandest place for a night out, but if you want simple, tasty fish and chips, Catch is definitely worth a visit.

Le Café des Stagiaires

Le Café des Stagiaires is a delightful surprise on Yongkang Road, as the Parisian-style cafe is the perfect location to soak up the street scene and spring sunshine. When it opened last November, the concept was more of an "after-work bar," but it has turned out to be a popular cafe during the day and a chill-out bar in the evening. As one of the most authentic French cafe/bars in town, many French-speaking residents and tourists gather here to drink, eat and chill out. Among drinks on offer are coffee, beer, wine and cocktails, all at reasonable prices. From 4pm to 8pm, there is a killer happy hour deal, with house wine only 20 yuan, La Chouffe beer 30 yuan and a glass of pastis 10 yuan. Lacking a proper kitchen, Le Café des Stagiaires provides cold cuts (80 yuan/100g) and cheese (80 yuan/100g) from Les Garcons Bouchers across the road; 10 different pizzas (55 to 95 yuan) from Pizza Peppone and desserts from La Boulangerie next door. The four sister venues were opened by the same folks behind Le Saleya, a popular French bistro on Changle Road, and it seems they are confident of Yongkang Road becoming another trendy lifestyle destination.
