Fun finds and fine French fare

A sunny day spent strolling along this tree-lined street in the former French concession will bring about a few fun finds for the avid shopper. While perhaps not a shopping go-to spot like Nanjing Road W. or Taikang Road, there are a few boutique stores on the section between Hunan and Huaihai roads that are worth checking out. Add a pleasant ambiance and a small enclave of restaurants and cafes tucked away behind Ferguson Lane on 376 Wukang Road that are worth a stop for some decent French food and wine tasting in one of Shanghai's most charming neighborhoods.

Spring is the best season to make the most of Wukang Road, known for its eclectic architecture demonstrating varying styles and periods, while platane trees provide shade and beauty along the street.

My Landiao

My Landiao offers jewelry, handmade shoes, embroidery and other handicrafts created by Miao and other ethnic artisans from Guizhou Province. The Miao is one of China's ethnic minorities, and with many traditional skills getting swept to the wayside by increasing globalization, the shop's owner strives to continue authentic tradition, not simply tourist paraphernalia, and bring it north to Shanghai. Jewelry with intricate designs and patterns is 100 percent silver, and ranges in price from 200 to 3,000 yuan. The saying "you get what you pay for" rings true in this case - with fine quality resources and everything being made by hand, this is the genuine article. Handmade paper, crafted with natural ingredients such as seasonal leaves and mountain flowers, is also available for between 20 to 50 yuan. If you're lucky and a tea lover, the owner will invite you to join her for a cup of tea in the shop's cozy upstairs, a pastime usually reserved for old friends and loyal customers.

A Cote

The buttery flavor of cheeses such as French Emmenthal distinguishes much French pizza from its Italian counterparts made only with milky mozzarella. When the Emmenthal cheese, tomato, herbs and other ingredients are spread over a thin round dough and then subjected to a spell in the wood-fired pizza oven, the result is a masterpiece that is crisp, tasty and fresh with a woody aroma. A Cote, opened recently by Franck Pecol in Ferguson Lane, serves authentic, extremely tasty Provence pizzas. There is no menu, only a chalkboard written in French which the staff will happily translate and explain their specialties to you. They serve six tomato base and three cream base pizzas, priced from 80 to 160 yuan (US$12.27-18.40) for each. The first-time customer is recommended to try the moitie moitie (half tomato anchovy and half tomato cheese) or royale varieties. A choice of one pizza, one green salad, plus two drinks is about 210 yuan. Sitting outdoors and savoring A Cote pizza feels like summertime in the south of France.

Feine Cashmere Shanghai

Upon entering shoppers could be reminded of the classic preppy styles of Western brands such as J Crew or Ralph Lauren, however, this Shanghai boutique specializes in the rather indulgent fabric of cashmere - at not so indulgent prices. Open since 2009, this clothing specialty shop is run by a German-born expatriate who also designs all of the garments in the store and has another branch located in Pudong due to open in July. Expect to find good quality cashmere with a modern, European elegance at a reasonable price with women's sweaters ranging from 600 to 800 yuan and men's costing around 850 yuan. Smaller items such as scarves are a steal at 250 yuan while heftier pieces such as a large cape can cost up to 2,300 yuan. Even as warmer weather approaches Feine assures its customers that cashmere remains a year-round fashion accessory; try the ultra-fine cashmere items guaranteeing comfort without sacrificing lightness.
