Hip shops and cafes on charming street

AMONG the many charming roads and alleyways of the former French concession Julu Road stands out as one with a practically unbeatable array of restaurants, cafes, and niche shops. This relatively long street spanning from hectic shopping near Huaihai Road to the quaint residential neighborhoods further west won't let you down. Julu Road is a sure fire bet to find anything your little heart desires and is a great go to spot for any range of entertainment whether its divine international cuisine or specialty shops. Take a stroll from the intersection with Ruijin No. 1 Road to Shaanxi Road S. and you will be surprised by the road's amalgam of historical, cultural and commercial aspects.


Napoleon Chocolate Bar

To get your chocolate fix and socialize with friends at the same time, Napoleon Chocolate Bar is a perfect choice. Open since March, this spacious cafe, complete with comfy seats and a relaxed atmosphere, provides a wide selection of desserts and sweet snacks. Examples of these cocoa inspired treats include blueberry chocolate cake, white chocolate creme brulee, and even a new twist on dessert - beetroot chocolate cake. All are available for between 32 yuan (US$4.92) and 38 yuan a slice. With all chocolate coming from Belgium, this is the real deal. The real specialty here is Napoleon's hot chocolates. A variety of unusual flavors like coconut, mint, and chilli hot chocolate are all delicious options.

Peeping Bon

A hipster's paradise, Peeping Bon is a bike shop fully equipped with everything you need to suit your cycling needs. The shop displays a wide range of colors and styles for every single separate bike part from the frame down to the wheel so that you can build your very own fixed gear ride. Heavily influenced by hip hop culture, the store carries skateboards of all types which can also be custom made. Peeping Bon even has what to wear on your sweet new ride with a rather stylish assortment of athletic footwear, graphic T-shirts and jackets. While having been open for three years in Shanghai it's only been open for one month in it's new Julu Road location where the store's owners are both locals - one in charge of the bicycle parts, the other the skateboards and clothes. Custom-made bikes start at 2,700 yuan and while a bit steep, you can be assured it's hip, one of a kind and also good quality as the store is supplied with mostly Airwalk products. Keep an eye out for promotional events at Peeping Bon.

Tian Shou Gu Wu

One of the most popular Japanese eateries on Julu Road, Tian Shou Gu Wu serves authentic and traditional Japanese dishes without gimmicky rolls, sushi and sashimi. It's a place where a well-balanced menu meets a "feels-like-family" vibe, a little oasis from life's stresses. The eatery is known for its yaki-gyoza (Japanese fried dumplings) with 13 different ingredients and flavors (15 yuan to 30 yuan). Other recommended food items include spinach salad (25 yuan), fried chicken nuggets (35 yuan) and pan-fried pork liver (28 yuan). You can also explore a variety of rice and noodle dishes priced at about 38 yuan each. A decent dinner costs about 100 yuan per person including a soft drink. The two-floor eatery also has a decent selection of sake and shochu to pair with well-presented food. Tian Shou Gu Wu has a royal following for its consistently great food and friendly atmosphere.

LE366

For those who love boutique shopping, LE366 is a colorful shop on Julu Road with an assortment of clothing from three prominent brands. Clothes by Shanghai designer Helen Lee, as well as clothing from Matchbox and Jiang Cha are available at this shop, in addition to the shop's own selection. Head over for a look at the current summer collection, which includes fun summer dresses in both solids and floral prints, as well as an assortment of skirts and tunics. Several trendy belts, as well as an assortment of hair accessories, are also available. Prices range from between 500 yuan to 1,000 yuan and up, and the unique items here typically reflect contemporary Chinese design.
