Lively location is perfect for passing time

Situated between Beijing Road W. and Wuding Road, much of this section of Jiaozhou Road is occupied by small shops, restaurants and grocery stores. But a recent visit discovers the unexpected and the obvious with new lifestyle options. Allow yourself a treat at the chic urban eatery Downstairs or the popular chain Wagas, or try out the Shanghai soup dumpling and Suzhou-style noodles in one of the local eateries along the road. Don't miss the tiny, old Shanghai No. 2 Watch Factory shop for its vintage Shanghai Watch or the modern design Tourbillon watch. Walking along Jiaozhou Road, one can sense the liveliness of a Shanghainese neighborhood but also enjoy a Western lifestyle.

Shanghai No. 2 Watch Factory Shop

It is an easily missed, extremely tiny, old store at the corner of Jiaozhou and Wuding roads. But it sells the classic Shanghai Watch and Baoshihua Watch, which has piqued interest among lovers of the original Chinese watches from the 1970s and 80s. Unlike those fancy, prestigious watch boutiques on Nanjing Road W. and Huaihai Road, the vintage-look Shanghai Watch and Baoshihua Watch are piled high in small baskets, a "unique" watch-shopping experience. The most appealing 1970s-style manual-wind Shanghai Watch is priced 280 to 350 yuan. Since Shanghai Watch's owners began repositioning the brand toward the luxury end of the market, the shop features new designs such as a 6,500-yuan classic Tourbillon watch and a limited-edition manual-wind watch priced at 3,500 yuan.

Le Tour Traveler's Rest Youth Hostel

Tucked inside a lane on Jiaozhou Road, this youth hostel has developed into an intimate, charming oasis inside the building of a 1930s towel factory. After a one-year renovation, the 3,000-square-meter hostel was opened in 2008 by Jane Chen, who established her first Le Tour branch on Bailan Road. It features 70 rooms with different shapes. A standard double room is priced at 200 yuan, a twin-bed room 240 yuan and a three-bed room 330 yuan. The place is about backpackers and young people connecting with each other so the public spaces are extremely spacious and warm. The first floor features a cozy library, a reading room, a space for table tennis and snooker. The top-floor restaurant and bar also has a roof-top terrace with a far more personal atmosphere which is hard to find in budget hotel chains. Backpackers choose Le Tour for its central location, warm atmosphere and low budget.
